| Books of Names: While I protested the Vietnam war, I did not consider war themes for my work until the Bangor Symphony performed Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem." The chorus and soloists sang words from the Requiem Mass along with the stark and beautiful poetry of Wilfred Owen. I made a hanging book incorporating some of these words. In 2007, I collaborated with Maine poet, Lee Sharkey for the Belfast Poetry Festival and was drawn to her war related poems that included names of the dead. For centuries calligraphers have written memorial books and so I began writing the names of military and civilian dead from areas of conflict. In several pieces the names form the background for the poems; they are the cause and cost of war.
